We have Sprouts!
The kids have been excited about this garden, especially Drew, the 3 year old. "Leaps! There's leaps on the bubble garden Dad!"
(The "Sprout" model aerogarden has a little bubble wand you can see and hear)
SO here they are, the first to make their long awaited appearance at the Whitehouse!

Deer Tongue Lettuce

Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce
Thai Basil
Genovese Basil
Here's a shot of our Lettuce Garden. (AKA "bubble garden")
Here's a quick shot of the "bounty" model, packed with our herbs.

Adventures in Hydroponics

SO this year we decided to try our hand at hydroponics. Don't let that sound super complicated. It's really quite simple.
We have purchased two aerogardens.
Check them out here
Shanon and I had seen advertisements for these several years ago, and we always said that it looked very cool. I have always wanted to have fresh herbs in the kitchen for when I'm cooking, but we never really put this whole thing on our priority list.
Now that we have been cooking much, much more at home, we decided to make the investment. Although we know it will take several batches of herbs/Lettuce before we see much return on our investment, we do spend money on fresh herbs quite often, and although they are not the most expensive thing we buy at the grocery store, $2.99 here and there 3-4 times a month does in fact add up over a few years, and with us growing our own, we will definitely use even more fresh herbs, which is overall healthy for the family as well.
We have also been researching how to plant/grow with these gardens organically, although the first initial planting has been done with the seed pods the gardens came with.
We are looking forward to doing some container gardening this year, as I have had the itch the last two summers to get some veggies planted.

Alright, enough of the why.
Thursday February 11, 2016 We planted 12 pods across the two Gardens.

On the 3 Pod "Sprout" model, we planted leaf lettuces. Black Seeded Simpson, Deer Tongue, and Paris Island.
On the 9 Pod "Bounty" model, we planted Thai Basil, Genovese Basil, Dill, Italian Parsley, Mint, Chives, Curly Parsley, and Cilantro.

Chewbacca

This past weekend, I lost my companion.

After having the last few days to kind of feel the loss and grieve, I have begun to reflect on my relationship with him.

Chewbacca was a rescue dog, he was half starved and weak when he first came to live with us on that New Years Eve. I remember thinking to myself the first few days that he looked how I felt at the time. Slowly but surely he began to put some weight back on, and his boxer energy began to return.

We lived in a pretty run down neighborhood in Detroit. Our next door neighbors were less than desirable on most accounts, and especially where our dog Chino was concerned. One of our neighbor's favorite pastimes was to torture Chino when he would come out to use the bathroom. Because it was wintertime it was happening less, and up until this time they had not met Chewbacca. This particular time Chino had gone out first, and to my disappointment I immediately heard the neighbor boy and his friend begin to laugh and throw snowballs at Chino. At the same time, Chewy reached the top of the stairs and came out of the door. The taller boy ran up to the fence and threw a huge snowball out in the yard towards Chino. As they were laughing, if you can imagine an airborne boxer, front paws well up and over the fence, "shoving" the boy back from the fence. Chewy's two front paws hitting him at about the shoulders, followed by an extremely girly scream as the boy fell back into the snow. It was as if Chewy was telling the neighbors to stop picking on little helpless Chino. I am still chuckling as I write this. Chewy never made a sound. He just did this "ninja" move and then stood there, daring them to do something else. Chewy had a way of introducing himself....lol

My next memory that sticks out was on a pretty rough night for me. Most know now that my brother is currently fighting brain cancer. A few days after his first surgery, we learned of the cancer type, and the prognosis was extremely bad. The years I had always taken for granted were now reduced to a few short expected months. After getting the news earlier in the day, I remember not being able to sleep that night. I got out of bed in the middle of the night, and went up to sit in the living room. As I sat there thinking, I was overcome with emotion, and just closed my eyes and cried for awhile. After a few moments I noticed something on my lap, which turned out to be chewy's face. He just quietly sat there with me, the whole time, as I repeatedly tried to compose myself. It's funny how dogs just know when you need them, and how willing they are to be there for you.

Even as I write this I am affected by his absence. I am alone at my computer desk late at night, which is new territory for me. He faithfully sat through my late night homework sessions, forgoing his couch until I headed to bed.

Dogs are amazing creatures. They bring so much joy and comfort to our lives. I truly believe they are one of the best things on this planet. Which makes loosing them one of the worst things. Dogs don't care about what you do for a living, what your GPA is, what kind of clothes you wear, or the car that you drive. They only see what really matters; who you are as a person. I love that about them.

Chewbacca inspires me to keep pushing forward, to be the person that he thought I was.

7/18/10

Greetings all!
The seedlings are doing fine. Tomorrow afternoon we will be planting more, in preparation for the coming fall season. (I have read you can start planting near the end of August/early September. We also picked up a small raised bed kit on clearance at walmart last time we were there, so I will be dedicating that to onions. Since it would be hard to grow those in buckets anyway, with the addition of the raised beds we will actually have a onion patch!

Also, this week I will officially start a new gardening blog, since this one was originally intended to just be about family happenings.

Hope everyone has a great week!

7/1/10 Another Garden Update

Well,
it seems that every single time we walk by the seedling tray, something is a little taller. There are only 3-4 peat pots out of the 36 that still have no growth. How exciting! In a few months those trips to the produce department will be a thing of the past! I would say by the end of next week it will be time to plant some buckets!!!!

Here are some updated pictures:

Checkup 6/30/10

It has now been a week since we started the first seedlings. (Some of those still aren't showing signs of life yet.) However, some of the seedlings we planted on Saturday, are already breaking through the surface. This has surely taught us that quality seeds do indeed make a difference.

Here are some pics from today:
